The Power of Helo – How Hard Work, Love, Loyalty, and Resilience Has Led to Our Continued Growth and Gratitude.

As I sit here on the floor, I’m typing with the happy endorphins coursing through me and a beverage by my side because I just got to be part of a great win! I got to play on Helo’s Co-Ed softball team tonight, and not only did we win, but we came back in a tie game against an undefeated and good team! We came out ahead and it was fun and it was awesome.  We were the underdogs in this particular game, not the perfect team by any means, and we pulled together and won – and man does that feel great!

Which leads to the real point of my musing tonight … which is what I just witnessed over the weekend, where we took a building that was previously occupied by a countertop company, and on Friday afternoon we finally got possession of it, and it was filled with inches of dust from 10 to 15 years of use without a proper cleaning. I believe I saw something truly extraordinary occur within 48 to 72 hours that I have never seen before – I observed what the power of Hard Work can do.  Some would call it miraculous – I call it the grit, determination, skill, hustle, and intensity of some of the hardest working people that I have ever had the pleasure of being in the company of – and they are all members and athletes at Helo!

I am so freaking proud of every single person I interacted with or received a note from or saw in person.  There are so many people to thank it honestly, is so tremendously difficult because throughout the weekend, I watched people give up their time to help us move (which no one likes to do), and tirelessly work through the different tasks with a speed and proficiency that was just inspiring and crazy to watch, all volunteering and just being decent, kind human beings.  Some indicated, oh I’m sorry I could only help here, or offer this – please know that all of it – ALL OF IT – was so amazing and just perfect.  Also, please know that we are so tremendously grateful to each and every one of you, even if we have not had a chance to say it directly to you yet – we know what you have done for us.

Which leads to my next point, the Love that those at Helo exude and that make our box the best one in the state.  I know that’s a bold statement but I believe in it 100 percent.  Not only do we have amazing athletes but we have truly genuine, and decent people at our box, and we know you did it out of sheer love for us and for your box and the home that you have made of it, and that is something you cannot buy, you cannot teach, and you cannot bottle – it is just felt and Helo Love is awesome.

And that leads me to my next point – to the Loyalty and Resilience of our Helo athletes.  Over the last 6 months you have watched us as we struggled to find a new home for Helo, and you stayed loyal and you maintained your faith in us.  The times I cried over our box as we searched for solutions when lead after lead failed, and yet you stayed loyal and held true.  Your faith in our ability to succeed carried us through many a rough night, and as I know, it may surprise you but Alecio and I have probably discussed, argued over, cried/cheered/laughed and wondered,  over the future of Helo and every single athlete and coach at our box,  on more occasions than I can count, because we have considered you all our friends and our family, whom we have trusted and where we have cried over failures or losses and felt joy for your success while cheering for your happiness.  The weight has been tremendous and those that have stayed loyal and true – we also know who you are and want to reward that.

And as I stand here tonight, I am truly awed by our Resilience, we have just transitioned after months of uncertainty to a completely new space and all I have heard is positive comments and feedback – it is no joke to listen to the thanks from you all, who just nearly broke your backs getting everything in place and yet you are thanking us, for keeping Helo going and for putting in the time into this new space, where even if it is temporary, we are putting 100 percent into it because that is what you all deserve, as do our new members who have never seen the old Helo, and because we don’t do anything with only a half effort – we go full throttle and moderation is for cowards! Your resilience and flexibility in the face of change is so exciting.

Which leads to my final note – the continued Growth and Gratitude that encompasses Helo! Through this difficult time and now that we are into our new space, we are growing and becoming better, and it is something to take pride in.  Helo is succeeding where other boxes have failed, and we are known as a great place to be and I feel nothing but gratitude and the desire to do everything in my power to keep pushing forward, learning the hard lessons that need to be learned, being humble when the flaws arise, adapting when the poop hits the fan, and being grateful for all the great things Helo has going on right now and embracing the future head on!

Thank you so much to each and every one of you for being athletes and loyal members of Helo – we are grateful for you and can’t wait for this upcoming year in our new space!

Sincerely,

Coach Julia
