Showing Up

Recently I read an IG post by Games athlete, Michaela North, (she was on the 2017 winning affiliate team from Wasatch CrossFit) talking about her struggles returning to the box postpartum. She was unknowingly 5 weeks pregnant at those Games and had just delivered her 4th baby a few months ago. It struck a cord with me because of my personal experience with postpartum returns to the box, but got me thinking that the sentiment holds true for many of us at different points in life.

For most of us, dare I say even all of us, fitness is not linear, there are highs and lows and loopty loos and setbacks. From injuries and illnesses to surgeries; pregnancy/postpartum to a demanding work or school schedule and just plain hard life stuff there are lots of factors that can take our fitness journey off track. The gist of her post was show up anyway (obviously, after the proper recovery has taken place).

Your mile time might be minutes slower, run anyway. Your snatch might be 50 pounds below what it used to be, snatch anyway. You may have lost your pull-ups or handstand push-ups or whatever skill you had worked hard to earn. It’s okay. Just showing up and doing what you can is enough. Focus on what you are doing well and let the rest fall where it may. It can be extremely frustrating and defeating but it will pay off.

Consistently showing up (even when it’s hard) will eventually turn into it not being so hard. Not to mention there is more than likely somebody, probably even a coach, at the box who has experienced what you’re going through or similar and come out on the other side. Sometimes just knowing it’s possible to get through it can make whatever it is less daunting. One of the best things about CrossFit and especially Helo in my opinion is having coaches and a community of people behind you. Trust in that and keep showing up!

Thank you for reading!

Sincerely,

Coach Kris
