Tuesday Night Musings with Coach Preston.

“Nobody makes a greater mistake than he who does nothing because he could only do a little” – Edmund Burke.

This is a quote from a book I am reading right now (The Power of Optimism), and it really stood out to me because it is something that I have been working on this year. I think we all have a tendency (I know I do) to look past the little things in life. We focus on the big goals and grand gestures, leaving behind the little things that can really add up to make the most progress. Not only that, but those goals and grand gestures can often not be accomplished or carried out, and then we are caught in a maze that leads to nowhere.

Wouldn’t it be better to do a little bit at a time, or just do something little in general, rather than dwell on the large picture stuff with the risk of accomplishing nothing at all? To give a personal example, I have always left my house/yard work for the weekends, rather than chip away at small projects throughout the week. This would leave me overwhelmed and there were often times I did not get anything done. Then each weekend would build on the next, until I had to kill myself to get things done in 1-2 days. It has been much more satisfying, both mentally and physically, to get a little bit done at a time, rather than everything at once. Or even worse, nothing at all.

Another thing I have been trying to do is small gestures for my wife, especially on days where she worked through pregnancy. Small things like ice cream when she got home, a warm bath bomb bath, flowers, a thoughtful text, etc. Those small things like that can go a long way and as irritating as it is for me to say this, I never thought those small things were big enough to bother with. They are!

So, I challenge all of you to focus on completing small easy tasks around the house, at work, in your relationships, at the box, etc. Be creative with your time and get little things done, and do it often. Before you know it, all those little puzzle pieces will have made a BIG difference.

Thanks for reading!

Sincerely,

Coach Preston
