Tuesday Night Musings by Coach Stef.

New Year, New me-

Nope, this isn’t about YOUR New Year’s resolution….. It’s not about mine either. It’s about the new guy that just walked in for his first intro, or the new girl that just showed up for her first “real class.”  Do you remember the nerves you had running out of control on your first day? Did you sit in your car for 10 minutes giving yourself a pep talk? I know I did. I have told Alecio this a couple of times, but just having to try pronouncing his name was scary to me. Did I say it right? Did I make it sound weird? Is everyone saying in their head “Duh!!! That’s not how you pronounce it.” For me, my first day at Helo was 4 years ago this week.

Although I wish I had of started with Alecio from the beginning, I will call myself fortunate to have started at another box before finding my home at Helo. Fortunate because when I made the switch I was welcomed with open arms (unlike the previous box), and also had my eyes opened to how a class should run…technique, appropriate scaling, and what proper care of equipment should really look like. I know sometimes it is really easy to forget how nice we really have it. Kudos to Julia and Alecio for building a community that takes pride in keeping the box tidy and having members who truly care for one another. For many of us, Helo is now our home, and we feel just as comfortable here as we do in our own home.

So, going back to that new guy/girl. Next time try to remember how you felt your first day:

– Maybe it was like your first day at a new school.
– Maybe (for some) it was like going to the dentist – you know it’s good for you but it’s still scary.
– You probably didn’t know anyone.
– Maybe you were scared out of your mind because of the picture society paints of what CrossFit is.

How many times have you had a friend say; “Oh, you have to be crazy to do CrossFit!” or even better; “I would have to get into shape before I even think about trying CrossFit.”

Well, the new member to walk through the door could be another “Stef” -someone looking to lose weight and gain some self-confidence back. Or, maybe they are another “Juice” – someone looking to put on a little muscle and prove the doctor wrong who said he would never lift heavy or run long distances again because of a back surgery.

My point is… stop sizing up the newbie – remember to walk over, offer a smile, a handshake, and introduce yourself. They just might be your new accountability partner, or spotter on a lifting day, or even better — a new best friend! I know that I have found many dear friends in my CrossFit journey, and it all started because I wanted to come back the next day because “that one girl was so nice” (You know who you are). Don’t let them walk out feeling like an outcast, they are family now, so treat them like chosen family.

My wish for you is that you can be the reason someone wants to come back the next day, and the next, and then the next. We ALL get better when that happens.

Thanks for reading!

Sincerely,

Coach Stef

Attention:  With the weather and slick driving conditions, we just wanted to mention a note about giving yourself a bit of extra time so you can drive safely and slowly to class:)
