Tuesday Night Musings with Coach Alecio.

My definition of CrossFit.

This past Saturday as the 9 am wod finished up and the 10 am was about to start, I could not help but feel grateful for our Helo community.  Close to 40 athletes were hanging out and catching up as the two classes overlapped. Some shared stories of the wod and how nasty it was, while others chatted about our most recent event, the Healthy Lifestyle Challenge, and the successes they had achieved during it.  The vibe was good and the energy was great.  I honestly didn’t want to start the 10 am wod.

It is hearing about how Helo events affect our members that really make me smile.  I have been doing CrossFit for 10 years now.  I have been through the ups and downs as a coach and as an athlete.  And for me – CrossFit is all about the community, the families and the friendships.  It’s not about my fitness level which can drastically change during the year.  It’s not about how many muscle-ups I can do or what my max snatch is.  It’s about getting to interact with all of you and the opportunity to build better and bigger relationships.  I know if I pass on that same belief to others around me, to all of you as members, that the fitness will come for those who stick around and immerse themselves in the culture.  People start because they want to get in shape but stay because of the community.  The fitness is just an added bonus.

With that being said, the next event we have coming up is the Leap Year Ride or Die Competition on Feb. 29th, where it is pretty exciting to have almost 50 athletes competing from In House and knowing that there will be volunteers, and spectators and just another great day to talk about! I have poured my heart and soul into planning wods that I thought would be as inclusive as possible, and while not perfect, know that I have spent a lot of time trying to come up with something that would be fun for everyone.  Also, we want to remember that things will maybe have a few hiccups as we don’t have professional judges, but I know that you all will act in the respectful manner that Helo athletes always do whenever we compete – which always makes us proud.  We are excited to see our community throw down and have fun – together.

The week after we have a Poker Night, and then other fun events later on in the year, including the Ragnar Trail Race and different co-ed sports teams, not to mention Murph, the BBQ, the 4th of July shenanigans, and the golf tournament, with random parties or bowling nights thrown in between.  I love all of the events that our community does together, and the genuine camaraderie that has been built in our walls.

Now, in the upcoming weeks on the Tuesday Night Musings, each coach will be focused on helping you guys and gals understand different fundamental components of CrossFit, including providing some insight into programming, nutrition, how we define fitness, and much more. But in the interim, I just wanted to note that to me – my definition of CrossFit is one focused on community, and my gratefulness for ours.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

Coach Alecio
