Gratitude.

It’s that time of year when everyone starts buzzing about gratitude. Thanksgiving is upon us! We know we need to be more grateful, we know it improves health, wards off depression, creates more joy and happiness, and improves your physical health – but what are we actively doing to express our gratitude? What small things can we do to express gratitude and make a small statement to those around us?

In my high school years, my family had a “Gratitude Journal” that we kept out all year long. It was essentially a blank book that anyone who entered our home could write in. My friends in high school would jot down their gratitude for “all-nighters” or “golf –ball diving” or a neighbor once wrote a personal story about her son’s battle with leukemia – and the gratitude she felt through the trial. It doesn’t really matter WHAT you write, it matters that you are actively thinking about the abundance we live in – big, or small.

I’m probably going to embarrass my husband – but one of my favorite phrases that he says all the time is: “How lucky are we?” We could be at the top of a trail run, the lake, at dinner, or just watching our crazy kids interact with each other. But he will say that one little statement and it makes me take a small pause and really let a moment of true gratitude sink in. Each of us in our own life, can say “How lucky are we?”

I purchased a “CrossFit Helo Gratitude Journal” that I will put at the front desk in the office. I challenge each and every one of us to jot down something we are grateful for. Maybe it is your health? Maybe you are grateful for the friendships at the gym, or I’m sure you are grateful for Cam and Jewkes’ Halloween costume because it made you giggle. It can be big or small, one sentence or one page. I know that others will benefit from reading your gratitude, and I know that YOU will benefit by taking a moment to express gratitude and say “How lucky am I?”

Over the past few years I have learned to be more grateful for adversity, because it makes us realize tender mercies and happiness. I’m grateful for injury, for it makes us even more grateful for health, and I’m especially grateful for our coaches and members – we truly have an amazing group of people at CrossFit Helo.

Thanks for reading and happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Coach Jess
